Chicago Dance History Project: Nassau, Bahamas
In 2019, Shirley Hall Bass’ grand-niece and Dance Educator, Cristin Carole, Bahamas Dance Theater Alumna, Christine Wallace-Whitfield and Dr. Faith Butler from the University of The Bahamas invited dance documentarian Jenai Cutcher from the Chicago Dance History Project to the Bahamas to interview the legacy students of the influential dance educator who first came to the Bahamas in 1952. Hundreds of documents were digitized and over two dozen interviews were recorded at the University of The Bahamas, Government High and Mrs. Bass’ home in Highland Park. As they discovered both the impact and continued need for high quality, culturally responsive performing arts education, the Shirley Hall Bass Legacy Project was born.
