Relocation, Resilience, & Recollection

August 24, 2024
Logan Center for the Arts, Chicago, IL

This is the first of three public events dedicated to preserving, elevating, and fundraising for the cherished legacy of the Sammy Dyer School of the Theater (SDST). August 24, 20524 showcased the rich history of SDST and its profound impact on Chicago's cultural landscape. In collaboration with local SDST alumni, local researcher Jenna Pollack presented her research contextualizing the school’s many locations since its founding in 1931 and their relationship to Chicago’s urban development.

The event was also a public call to share SDST memorabilia. Guests were invited to join a memory banking station to digitize photographs, costumes, program books, and other personal archives. These items will help continue a tangible connection to the school's rich legacy.

Shirley Hall Bass Foundation US, NPO 501(c)(3) preserves the legacy of pioneering performing artist Shirley Hall Bass and in doing so strengthens the connections within the African Diaspora through equitable and accessible performing arts education and programming in The Bahamas, Chicago and beyond.
