A Night at Club DeLisa

September 28th and 29th, 2024
The University of Chicago Logan Center for the Arts & The Promontory,
Chicago, IL

Our September, two venue production, our first Foundation benefit and a free public performance focused on an imaginary evening curated by Sammy Dyer, an African American tap dancer who left his successful career on Broadway to establish himself as a choreographer in Chicago. He opened the Sammy Dyer School of Dancing in 1931, where he trained young Black children in theater arts, ballet, tap and jazz. His unique approach to an evening of entertainment was most uniquely expressed when he ultimately perfected his showmanship in his presentation of The Dyerettes; 5 young Black women, who tapped, tumbled, sang and danced on point.

A Night at Club Delisa is an interdisciplinary and intergenerational live performance that re-imagines a night out at one of Bronzeville’s hottest clubs. Featuring reconstructed period dances, music, comedy and tap numbers from the late1940’s and 1950's representing the unique legacy of the Sammy Dyer School.
