Our September, two venue production, focuses on an imaginary evening curated by Sammy Dyer, an African American tap dancer who left his successful career on Broadway to establish himself as a choreographer in Chicago. He opened the Sammy Dyer School of Dancing in 1931, where he trained young Black children in theater arts, ballet, tap and jazz. His unique approach to an evening of entertainment was most uniquely expressed when he ultimately perfected his showmanship in his presentation of The Dyerettes; 5 young Black girls, who tapped, tumbled, sang and danced on point.

A Night at Club Delisa is an interdisciplinary and intergenerational live performance that re-imagines a night out at one of Bronzeville’s hottest clubs. Featuring reconstructed period dances, music, comedy and tap numbers from the late1940’s and 1950's.

Join us on Saturday September 28 for our very first Foundation Benefit and performance at the Promontory Nightclub in Hyde Park.

On Sunday September 29 we will present a free performance with our community arts partner the Logan Center for the Arts.

August 24, 2024 2-4pm

This is the first of three public events dedicated to preserving, elevating, and fundraising for the cherished legacy of the Sammy Dyer School of the Theater (SDST). August 24th will showcase the rich spatial history of SDST and its profound impact on Chicago's cultural landscape. In collaboration with local SDST alumni, local researcher Jenna Pollack will present her research contextualizing the school’s many locations since its founding in 1931 and their relationship to Chicago’s urban development.

The event will also showcase SDST memorabilia. Guests are invited to join a memory banking station to digitize photographs, costumes, program books, and other personal archives. These items will help continue a tangible connection to the school's rich legacy.
